Our History

We’re Ben and Ashley Smith, the owners of Polka Dot Potato.  We have been blessed with many years of entrepreneurial experience and expertise.  Here’s our history in a nutshell:

1996 – Opened a balloon business serving the Dallas metroplex.  We offered decor services and bouquet deliveries throughout the area.  Located at 911 Custer Rd. in Richardson, Balloons A Go-Go was our first success story!

1998 – With a partner, Ashley opened “Scrappy’s”, Dallas’ first retail scrapbook store!  With 2 locations, Scrappy’s enjoyed extreme success even being voted one of the top 10 scrapbook stores in the country by Better Homes and Gardens’ Scrapbook Etc. magazine.

1999 – Began Spot Merchandising, a company that developed and sold a merchandising fixture, Spot Pockets, specifically designed so that a large amount of  die cuts to be merchandised in a small area.  Spot Pockets were patented in 2003.

2001 – Ashley and Ben launched “Magic Scraps” and became designers and wholesalers of scrapbook product to independent scrapbook stores and chains such as Hobby Lobby. “Magic Scraps” was sold to Advantus Corp. in 2004.

2005 – Ashley and Ben launch “Polka Dot Potato” originally as a retailer of digital art.  Later, we discontinued retail sales to focus on print fulfillment along with web and graphic design.

2008 – Polka Dot Potato was chosen by Costco to provide digital photo templates to Costco.com.
